I spoke in Parliament at the Second Reading of the Hillsborough Law Bill — a moment that has been decades in the making thanks to the extraordinary persistence of the Hillsborough families and survivors.

Growing up in a community shaped by the tragedy, I know how much this matters locally and I’m proud Labour is acting on our pledge to deliver change.

The Bill’s purpose is simple: never again. Never again should victims be blamed, public bodies hide the truth, or families have to fight the state to uncover it. The duty of candour it introduces is a vital step forward, but culture change is just as important.

I also raised concerns about ensuring true equality before the law, especially when public bodies can afford top legal representation. We need proper oversight to ensure transparency, accountability and learning from past failures are delivered in practice.
