Dr Andreea Font, a senior lecturer at the Astrophysics Research Institute (Liverpool John Moores University) swapped her lab bench for the green benches when she joined Ellesmere Port and Neston MP, Justin Madders, in Parliament this week.
Justin met with Andreea as part of a unique pairing scheme run by the Royal Society- the UK’s national academy of science, with support from the Government Office for Science.
The scheme pairs scientists with parliamentarians and civil servants so that they can learn about each other’s worlds and explore how research findings can inform policy making.
During the week Andreea spent time with Justin in Westminster to get a behind the scenes insight into how policy is formed and how their research can be used to make evidence based decisions. The visit also gave Justin the opportunity to learn more about Andreea’s expertise.
“Parliament engages with the academic and research community in a variety of ways but opportunities like the Royal Society’s pairing scheme are fantastic for deepening these essential relationships.
“I’m delighted to be paired with Dr Andreea Font from the Astrophysics Research Institute at Liverpool John Moores University, one of the world's leading authorities in astronomy and astrophysics. This week will allow us to further build bridges between parliamentarians some of the best scientists in the UK.”
